It was with great sadness that we were informed of the passing on Saturday, 30th April 2022 of our friend Ciaran Ryan of Blackrock, County Dublin Whilst the lengthy distance from Launceston, Tasmania, to Dublin is great, I have always felt Ciaran was close by and living in the next County. I am unable to physically attend Ciaran’s Requiem Mass on Friday, 6th May 2022 and personally offer to his dear wife Deirdre, their children Sinead, Connor and Eoin and their partners, and grandchildren my heartfelt condolences. I vividly recall my first meeting with Ciaran in Melbourne, some thirty years ago at an International Conference of Trade Unions representing bank employees from the United Kingdom, New Zealand, All Ireland and Australia. Ciaran in his capacity of General Secretary of the Irish Bank Officials Association lead a united delegation of honorary officials from both from the Republic and Northern Ireland. I also clearly recalls that the delegation was enthusiastic, informed and committed – they were warmly welcomed, and their contributions were respected by all participants and their presence enhanced the conference. Ciaran Ryan emerged as a natural leader and was recognised for his engaging personality, wise counsel and extensive experience, exceptional intelligence and knowledge. It was obvious that Ciaran had a genuine commitment to advancing and securing the working conditions and wellbeing of working men and women. As the then Assistant Federal Secretary of the Finance Sector Union of Australia, with a then membership of some one hundred and twenty thousand people, I soon established a professional relationship and personal rapport with Ciaran, and which ultimately would endure for decades. I had the greatest respect and admiration for Ciaran Ryan as a man and dedicated trade union leader, who proudly fought the good fight with all his might – defender of workers, devoted to his family, committed to friends, faithful to Christ and dedicated to his Church. I give thanks to Almighty God that we were so greatly blessed and privileged have Ciaran Ryan as our very dear friend and loyal comrade. I trust that the Requiem Mass will be a worthy celebration of Ciaran’s extraordinary life - a gracious life well lived.

I have many happy memories of working with Kevin and the late Des Daly as students in Alperton Middlesex. We enjoyed some hilarious times. My thoughts are with his family
