RIP

I had the pleasure of being a student of Diarmuid's from 2006-2009. His passion for history & politics was infectious and his lectures were always very engaging. I consider myself very lucky to have studied under him and I know he will be sorely missed at UCC. I want to express my deepest sympathies to his family. He was a great guy.

An inspirational lecturer

I had the great privledge of once being a student of Dr. Whelan's in both 1st year Politics and 3rd year history. It was because of him that I found a true love and passion for African history in the context of decolonization. He made each lecture interesting and relevant. He was one of those rare lecturers, in that, regardless of how much you could be in awe of him and all he had accomplished, he made you feel at ease immediately. No question was ever too trivial for him to answer, and he made a point of engaging with students after class. It was his passion for his subject though, that drew each of us back time and time again; he exuded it, lived and breathed it. When he spoke, it wasn't mere banality but each of his topics meant something to him, something dear to his heart. He may have had packed classes but he always remembered a face, regardless of how many years had passed from when he last saw you, and with the recognition always came a smile, and a tilt of his head.

We will all miss him very much. He once said something to the effect that, as historians we must first be honest, get rid of our own preconceived prejudices and do justice to the research; strive for honesty and integrity in our work. I will uphold that for as long as I live.

My thoughts will be with his wife and son at this sad time, his family and his friends. We were all a little better for knowing such a remarkable, kind gentleman.

Ann Margaret Foley

(MA International Relations, UCC)
