Diarmuid – a kind, warm gentleman.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Diarmuid’s passing only recently. I knew Diarmuid from my Laser 2 dinghy days when we’d meet up around Ireland at different events from 1992 to 1999. Diarmuid was a gentle, kind and warm man. He was such good company and great fun. I will really miss him. He was one of a kind and made a big impression on me. I am so sorry for your loss.

Diarmuid Whelan: An Appreciation

Have just watched Diarmiuid Ferriter's excellent,'Limits to Freedom', after which I came upon the dedication to Diarmuid. I was shocked, naturally, at the passing of someone so young and full of life.

I tutored Diarmuid during his under grad years in UCC. He stunned me on the day of our first meeting with the revelation that he had not taken Leaving Cert History, but always wished he had! That said he brought his customary dedication and attention to detail to bear and suffice to say, he sailed through the course. I was delighted subsequently to see him go into post grad work and later to progress to being a respected historian and academic.

Our paths did not cross much in the past while but I was kept informed through mutual friends of Diarmuid's successes. He will be sadly missed.Sincerest sympathies to his wife, son and extended family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

Don Buckley

Teacher, PBC Cork
