One of a Kind

I was a student at Newtown School, Waterford, Ireland between 1979 and 1984. I had the privilege of getting to know Roger Garbett as the art teacher and photography enthusiast with the dry wit of a true Welshman, the inspiration of a great teacher and a heart for the students he taught. This led him not only to teach art and photography but how to look at life as a critical thinker and to find one's individual place in the world. On one occasion I had the privilege of meeting Roger and his family at their home in Annestown, Co. Waterford. Here, I saw another side to Roger Garbett. I saw the loving husband and father who was clearly adored by his wife and daughters and discovered Roger's appreciation of music, largely, but not entirely, classical. Every time I hear the guitar solo on "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac, I remember how much he loved it and was determined to learn to play it on his guitar. Roger, I often think of you and the stories you told in class and the way you challenged us to think outside the box. I am so sorry to hear that you struggled with illness. May you rest in peace. To Roger's family and friends, the memories which bring tears of loss today will, in time, bring smiles as you fondly remember a unique person who has had such a positive impact on so many lives.

A great Inspiration

I was in Roger Garbett's Art Class in Newtown, I was class of '82. Roger has been a great influence in my life. He helped me to deal with many things during my time there inside and outside the classroom. I draw on things he has taught me to this day. Knowing he is no longer with us will leave a gap in so many lives. Thank you Roger for the guidance you have given me. All my love Tissa Davis.

Inspirational teacher and a mentor.

Roger was the most inspirational teacher I had, he allowed me to think, and challenged me to create. I also knew that if I needed to hear the truth I could go to him. He will be missed by many.
