Enthusiastic Inspirational Encouraging

When Roger Garbett joined Newtown he seemed like a breath of fresh air. His methods and approach seemed new and 'modern' and I think students listened with interest to what he had to say. One felt immediately at ease and valued in his presence. Although I have not had contact with Roger since I left Newtown, I often think of him.

Seamus Kennedy, Newtown 74-80

tragic loss

I have only just found out about this and am numb with shock and sadness. Roger was a huge part of my life, both while at Newtown, and after. He was funny kind caring and had huge empathy for people. He was the first person I would turn to in a crisis, and there were a few! Rest in Peace dear friend.

Rachel Fogarty

Fondest memories of Roger Garbett

I send deepest sympathies to Roger's family, the names of whom I still remember, twenty years on, as he spoke about them in the sincere ways that an adolescent does not forget. Mr. Garbett gave much more time and attention to his students beyond that of curriculum and class time. As a struggling teenager I felt he cared and saw goodness in me. I suspect he felt compelled to reach out to the underdog as he lifted students up to seek out higher ideas and aspirations. His wisdom, independent Welsh spirit and presence is still an important part of my memories growing up in Newtown School. - Paula Leigh-Doyle

Never forgotten...

I studied art with Roger Garbett at Newtown. Some of the best memories I have at school were in his classes. He is the reason 25+ years later I love art. I think of him often.

Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
