RG
Ruarc you made my voice and my heart sing. As a boarder I chose to stay with you on the week-ends instead of going home. There in your pupil-crammed study, all of us vying for your attention, we would play music and make toast on your fire. The mold was broken when you were born. Love and light. RIP

Ruarc Gahan

There is so much I would like to say about Ruarc but for now I will just say that he has left an indelible mark on my life and the lives of my family - my late father Brendan Scott and my mother Carol Ann Scott and my brothers, Eoin and Ivan. He created an environment at Sutton Park School which has stayed with us all our lives and will never be lost. I am so very proud to have known him and to have been influenced by him - to think, to question and to care about the world and its inhabitants.

So many things he both said and did still resonate with me. Thank you Ruarc.

With love

Melanie Scott

Ruarc

Ruarc was a great inspiration to students and staff alike at Sutton Park. His infectious enthusiasm, gift and passion for music of all genres instilled in those he taught a lifelong love of music and the arts.

Organist and choirmaster, he was always bringing new and exciting music to add to our adventurous and expanding repertoire of music and song.

He was loved by all who knew him. His principles of ethics, peace and justice became the foundation that shaped the context for the lives of his pupils.

His love of animals, nature and the environment had a profound influence on how we, as students, might contribute to making a better world. He was loved by staff and pupils alike.

He treated children with the greatest of respect and more than that, gave us the gift of his time and attention whenever we asked for it. He was great fun.

His wry sense of self-deprecating humor was always appreciated by the students and he good-naturedly allowed himself to be the target for all kinds of humour, pranks and practical jokes.

His study door was always open and at every break time the study was crammed with pupils chatting, listening to his latest tapings from Radio 4 - such as Cleo Laine and Johnny Dankworth performing Shakespeare's Sonnets Jazz-style, a play, John Cage, Shostakovitch - the great musical adventure was all there to be explored.

Lively discussions were always the norm and no one was ever turned away. In the winter, the fire in the study was always full of roasting apples, chestnuts and potatoes wrapped in tin foil for break time snacks.

As a group of full-time boarders, we were proud to be "Sutton Parkers", proud to be part of an ethos that was based on love, respect, learning, the arts and music and a somewhat healthy irreverence for misplaced authority.

We were also very happy! Sutton Park days produced some of the happiest memories of my life and the legacy left behind by Ruarc Gahan is immeasurable.

The success and flourishing of the school can certainly be attributed to the extraordinary contribution of Ruarc and his staff in making Sutton Park a wonderful experience to be cherished, fondly remembered and greatly appreciated.

Trust, love and respect were the cornerstones of our education at Sutton Park. With generosity, caring, honesty, humor and a passion for the arts, he inspired us and led the way.

Ruarc, your memory will live on through each new generation of young people that have the privilege of attending the school.

Rest in peace. We will never forget you.
