A remarkable presence

As a temp I assisted Caroline for a short period. She treated me like the most special person in the building and encouraged me to write and work for the Irish Times. She prized every single person with the same passion and enthusiasm. I frequently saw her go out of her way to help young journalists. She was the most compassionate, hilarious and mischievous woman. Her passing is an indescribable loss to so many.

May I offer my most sincere sympathies to her family, friends and colleagues who must be so deeply shocked.

Belinda Kelly.

Inspiring mentor for young women : Helen Shaw

I started in the irish Times as a freelance when I was just 21. Caroline was the first person to encourage me, to commission me and to mentor me. She was always positive and always made me feel I could do it. She continued to be interested in my career throughout the years - always positive and always encouraging. A truly generous spirit with great editorial judgement. She made a real difference in my life and I know in that of many who followed. So sad to see her leave this mortal world but her legacy is great. My sympathies with her family and loved ones and all of her colleagues. Caroline, rest well and rest gently.
