A Great Priest and Mentor...

I attended UCD in 1960 as a clerical student and took Philosophy and Irish. I got to know Fr Michael Nolan as our lecturer in Psychology. I loved Psychology and Fr. Michael was always most helpful to me. I left Clonliffe College in 1962, and regretfully did not complete the degree. I will always remember Fr. Michael's kindness to me at that difficult time in my life, particularly his comment to me "that I would have made a very good Psychologist" I have always valued and remembered his remarks..

In recent years I often met Monsignor Nolan in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook and we remembered those days in UCD. A wonderful Priest, a great wit, now gone to his reward... My deepest sympathy to his family. "Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis" Charles Byrne UCD Arts 60-62

At Cambridge University

Michael Nolan took a second degree in Psychology at the University of Cambridge in the late 1950s, gaining what seemed like an effortless First. While there he instructed Megan in the faith, received her into the church, and then officiated at our wedding in north London on 20 August 1960. All a long time ago, but the memories are very fresh of a gentle, humorous, immensely intelligent and devout man with ever a twinkle in his eye. We had had it in mind to ask him to come again to Sheffield this coming August to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary.

Sparkling humanity

What a joy and privilege to have the inspiring, scholarly and ever-witty Fr Nolan ease us through psychology in the early seventies.

Equally erudite on white Go-Go boots and Vygotsky, he challenged and encouraged, sparked and charmed.

My abiding image is of Fr. Nolan, surrounded by students, eyes twinkling, quizzically posing yet another conundrum whilst quelling our post-exam angst at the annual Campari 'n Soda sessions.

His sparkling humanity remains forever with us.

Mary Kirby

Sad news

It was with great sadness that I heard of the death of Fr Nolan, whom I remember with great fondness for his kindness and encouragement to me as young naive student 1969-1973 doing the BA and then the first MA in Applied Psychology. All my sympathy to his family and close friends.

Deirdre Moylan
