Seeing into the life of things...

'That best portion of a good man's life,
His little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love' - I can still see and hear you reading 'Tintern Abbey' aloud in the Poetry Loyola classroom, the sun on your face; happily, I always will be able to...

Your acts of kindness and of love live on within us, never to be unremembered. You ensured my schooldays were not only truly happy, but also 'Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime / Of something far more deeply interfused'...

You made English a joy. Anything I ever write will be subject to your opinion from above the sky, Gerry.

I look forward to sitting in your English class again - and Loyola won't merely be a nameplate on a classroom door, but one of your privileged and enthralled pupils.

Whenever I need a DMC (deep meaningful conversation), I will close my eyes and converse with you. Gerry, you remain my English teacher, form tutor and friend forever. And it is you who, from a few miles above, will continue to help me 'to see into the life of things'...

Nos mos opportunus iterum. Gratias ago vos pro panton.

Andrew Greaney (OB '97)

Farewell to a great teacher & friend

I was lucky enough to have Gerry Haugh as my English teacher from 1987-1993 and he was a super inspirational kind of guy! He was not just your average 9-5 guy. He really seemed to care about the welfare of all his students and was always full of encouragement both in academic and in social matters! He worked too hard but he loved the job and he really gave it his all! I remember being involved in the school operas working behind the scenes as there was a place for everyone! Then there was the 5th year dramsoc (David Copperfield in my year) which he allowed even the shy people to have a part. He was always so encouraging. Of course there were the school trips in transition year to wicklow and recess which were super fun.
He was also involced in the annual block pull and sleep outs - to come to think of it I dont know when if ever he took a holiday from belvo!
He will be surely missed my all who know him and was such an inspirational figure that I am sure he has touched many in his career and life! he was one of the main reasons that I decided to become a teacher! He was truly like the figure Robin Williams played in Dead Poets Society and was my and Aylmers "Oh Captain, my Captain"! I send my condolences to his sister Maureen, and to all of his coleagues at Belvedere!

O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done,

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
May you rest in peace Gerry and hopefully I can someday be as good a teacher and mentor as you were! Amen
