So many years have gone by since Father Tom (Msgr Fehily) went to his eternal reward but having known and loved him since 1956 he remains in my daily prayers with deep gratitude for all he gave to so many people and to me. Requiescat in pace!

Dear family and friends of Fr. Tom

My name is Mike Rafferty and I am from Philadelphia in the USA. I am also a friend of James, we met years ago.

I met Msgr. Fehily (Fr. Tom) in 1992 when I competed as a boxer in Dublin against the Irish National Team. On the morning of the fight I went to a Church to get a blessing form a priest, (like Rocky and Fr. Carmine) and the priest i found that day was Fr. Tom. He was meditating in one of the pews. I thought he just had his eyes closed:) He was very kind and interested in my match. He gave me an awesome blessing with holy oil. My father Francis was also there, and we were going to wait for Mass as well. But Fr. Tom knew I had to get back to our hotel so he offered me communion right there on the spot. It was a blessing from God to meet him that day.

When I went back to my hotel room in Dublin after the fight that night, I was mad because I had lost a tough, close fight to Paul Griffin by split decision. I was angry and wanted fight still. And two days later I would box in Scotland, then a match in Poland three days from that. I was mad and distracted. But then I saw a gift wrapped present on one of the beds. I had hardley took notice. I thought it was for my roommate. But I finally saw my name on it. It was a big beautiful book of Ireland from Fr. Tom to me with a beautiful note about our meeting earlier that day. I never told him where we were staying, he went out of his way to find out for himself and then buy me a gift. It was awesome and very uplifting. It was the highlight of my whole trip in Europe. He was always the most generous man. Always giving his things away. Gifts, money, etc., but most of all hospitality, charity and love. I still have hanging in my bedroom the St. Michael Icon that Father signed and gave to me when i visited him a few years later.

Mike Rafferty, Philadelphia, PA, USA

mraff90@hotmail.com, 215-266-0750
