My sympathy for your family's great personal loss and a huge appreciation of the potential loss of many of our stories, had he not dedicated himself to preserving them. Annemarie Mullan

Remembering David - his creative heart and spirit. Sincere condolences from Joanna Fry (née Phibbs)

It was only this evening, Monday 21st February, that my mother Joanna (Phibbs) told me about David's passing. She recalled what a kind man he was and that sometime in their childhood years he had made a little garden for her as a gift. In eking out the story it became clear that it was not dug out of the fertile earth of Rathfarnham but made by his own dexterous hands and imagination. He used a small piece of mirror for the pond and the whole garden fitted on a tray. No doubt it gave her a lot of pleasure as she remembers this from all those years ago; and to this day her love of gardening has never waned.

As for myself, my first memory of David was his showing, at my great aunt Mary Taylor's home, a large pink house named 'Hilton' in Balinteer, of a documentary he had made about Connemara ponies. Mary's deceased husband was Joanna's uncle Geoffrey, a botanist and poet. He once created a green rose; but that's another story.

David's body of work is a great legacy, a treasure that someday will be a benchmark for future craftspeople and in so doing will continue to quietly invigorate our culture through the practical and earthy slowness of creating functional beauty to be enjoyed and appreciated for generations to come.

We wish you all a time of soothing, and trust that the goodness of David's life is fully embraced by the benevolent universe.

With sincere regards,

Robbie Fry
