In Memory of Sylvia Stanier

In the early 1960's I was a working pupil at Dudgeons near Leopardstown, preparing for the BHSAI exam. Amongst other horses I looked after Sylvia's much loved mare Fanny (bred by the Dudgeon family?). She also had a highly schooled dressage horse, Marquise? Sylvia had very high standards, which was good to learn with. Also, she was very generous with her time, seeing I was receptive to aspects of her methods-quite ahead of her time-she gave me great support and encouragement. I was green, and lacked confidence but she was considerate towards my failings! I have always felt I was very fortunate to have learned from her at a young age: To put the horse first, and consider its nature. Thank you Sylvia and may you rest in peace. Hilary Legard

Dear Sylvia! You made more difference than you would ever have believed. I'll always remember your kindness to me and joyous sense of humour, your commitment to doing the right thing and your real love of horses. Gillian Cooper.
