ATrue Gentleman and a True Scholar

Deepest sympathy to John's wife and family. I was shocked when I heard of John's sudden death, I can hardly imagine how it has affected you. Having known John most of his working life and having supervised a number of graduate students with him such as his earliest PhD students Frank O'Mara and Bridget Younge I can say he was one of nature's gentlemen and also a true scientist whose opinions and judgement were always worth seeking and on which you could rely. He never allowed himself to be pushed beyond the limits of his science to curry favour with any interest group. Words are cheap but I can only repeat that in the top rank as an person and as a scientist. Again I want to extend my condolances to his wife and family.

Kind regards,

Myles Rath (UCD retiree)
