HALLIGAN - Brendan (Rathfarnham) - As we remember Brendan, a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend on the First Anniversary of his passing, his wife Margie and family wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to all of those who sympathised with them on their sad loss. We greatly appreciated the attendance of Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D. Higgins and other political dignitaries and representatives at Brendan’s funeral Mass. We wish to thank our extended family especially Brendan’s sister Eileen, neighbours in Rathfarnham and friends. We greatly appreciated your kind messages of condolences, which gave us great comfort and strength. Very special thanks to the wonderful medical team in the Mater Private Hospital led by Professor Peter O’Gorman, for their exceptional care throughout Brendan’s illness. We would also like to thank the wonderful carers from Liberty Homecare and Irish Homecare who looked after Brendan in his final weeks at home. Sincere thanks also to Fr Peter Murphy in the Mater for his many visits to Brendan, which we know he always greatly welcomed and appreciated. Our deepest thanks to Criofan Shannon and staff at Life Pharmacy (Rosemount SC) for many years of outstanding service. You were always there to offer support and we were deeply touched to see you all standing outside the pharmacy as Brendan passed on his final journey. All our gratitude to Claire and Eddie Treacy for your friendship and assistance during many difficult months. We will never forget all you did for Brendan. Special thanks to Fr Peter O’Connor for celebrating the funeral mass, family members Brian O’Shea and Deirbhile Brennan for the beautiful music and to Pat Cox for delivering the eulogy. We were overwhelmed to see so many of you outside the church and grateful to all who could not attend but watched the funeral online. Thanks too to Corrigan & Sons Funeral Directors for guiding us through our final goodbye with such compassion and professionalism, particularly John McDonagh. Brendan enjoyed many careers over his lifetime. We would like to acknowledge all of his former colleagues who sent their condolences, including comrades in his beloved Labour Party. We would like to give a special mention to the IIEA - the culmination of Brendan’s long-standing devotion to Europe and Ireland’s place within it. The IIEA’s many achievements and high standing internationally is the greatest legacy left by Brendan’s public life and the family watched your inaugural Brendan Halligan Memorial Lecture in May 2021 with immense pride. We thank you for remembering him and wish you continued success. For all messages of sympathy, flowers, cards, letters, emails, Mass cards, phone calls and wonderful tributes and memories online to Brendan, thank you.
We appreciated all your uplifting words, memories, friendship, and expressions of high regard. Brendan’s anniversary mass will be celebrated at 10am on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at the Church of the Holy Spirit Ballyroan and can be viewed online. As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgment as a token of our deep gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. Brendan was deeply loved and will forever be sadly missed.
