For a Special Friend and Confidante With Much Love And Gratitude

I bury a friend tomorrow.

A woman who gave me constant and unswerving support these past two years.

One of the best friends I’ve ever had.

She has died young.

A victim of our uncaring society. Something I had spoken of with her so often.

How ironic that someone so giving, so empathetic, so caring should lose her precious and priceless life so pointlessly.

Hilda was my rock.

The best rock I’ve ever had.

A rock forged of gentleness and compassion and empathy.

The best listener I ever knew.

Who always valued and honoured what I had to say and never, ever rubbished my point of view.

Who knew nothing about plants but loved what I knew about them.

Who knew everything about psychology and was happy to pass on her knowledge to me.

Who I always looked forward to seeing no matter how dark the day.

Who I always left smiling.

Because of her wonderful, positive, you-can-do-it spirit.

We debated.

And we philosophised.

We shared.

And we analysed.

We learned from each other.

And we laughed with each other.

We enjoyed each other’s company.

And we gained from each other’s insights and points of view.

I have some books she lent me – one with her name inscribed.

She has a succulent pot I made her – that I hope will never die.

Thank you dear friend for all you gave and all you taught me.

I don’t know how I will get by without you.

I know it would be to your credit if I can.

But I miss you already.

And always will.

Abandoned again.

Lost again.

Unheard again.

You know what I mean.

Like no other.

I hope I can get through this.

For you dear Hilda, for you.

With much love and gratitude x
