was friends with Owen in Glenstal and he was both good company and great fun sometimes. He wore the coat of his own greatness lightly, that he was good at everything was obvious, and he didn't make a big deal of it. I recall him organising an expedition at 3am to the teachers common room to eat the biscuits. He entertained us on his electric guitar in the draughty stage gym. He inspired me to read. I only met him once after school, by complete change; we very happily discussed old times for an hour. The news of his sudden passing was shocking, I always just assumed we would meet again. He was one of the good guys.

I did the MSc in Mathematics at UCD with Eoin. In fact, at the time we were close friends. I am deeply sorry and sad at Eoin's tragically early passing. He was a true intellectual in the best sense of the word. Pauline Mellon.
