SMYTH Peter Edward (Dublin) formerly of the Department of Foreign Affairs - December 28, 2011 (suddenly), while holidaying abroad, deeply loved brother of Ruth, Bryan and Kieran, loving uncle of Scott, Karl, Laura and Graham and brother-in-law of Noel, Clodagh and Margaret, and uncle-in-law of Davina; sadly missed by his family, many relatives and friends. Funeral Mass on Monday (Jan 9) at 11 o'c in St. Mary's Church, Haddington Road followed by burial at Balgriffin Cemetery. Family flowers only please."May he rest in peace."

<p>A talented and cultured man</p> <p>Peter was a wonderfully talented diplomat. He was also enormously cultured, able to converse on a wide range of subjects from literature to art or politics. We were both posted together in Tokyo in the early eighties, he with the Department, I with the European Commission. I greatly enjoyed his company. He was an outstanding representative of all that was best in Ireland. I am very sorry that he has left us so soon. May he rest in peace.</p>
