GILLESPIE, Dr Raymond, MRIA, Drumcondra, Dublin, and formerly Belfast. Historian, Maynooth University, on February 8, 2024 in the Mater Hospital, Dublin. Predeceased by his parents Ernest and Annie Gillespie, Belfast. Deeply regretted by his loving wife and best friend, Bernadette Cunningham, his sisters-in-law, Mary Cunningham (Galway) and Teresa Cotter (Ennistymon), his brother-in-law Pat Cunningham (Corofin), relatives, colleagues and many good friends. Prayer Service on Monday (February 12) in St Colman’s Church, Corofin, Co. Galway, H54 X768 at 11.30am prior to burial in Kilmoylan Cemetery, Co. Galway. Family flowers only please.

I knew Raymond for nearly 50 years, he was a a crucial figure in the emergence of local history in this country and as a person an absolute gentleman. RIP. Peter Thompson, TCD History and Political Science, 1977.
