The loss of a great diplomat and scholar
Brian's death is a very sad event. I met him when he was a diplomat in Poland where he made a wonderful contribution and helped and supported many cultural endeavors. He was also a fine scholar and great enthusiast of Irish literature with many important publications to his name. He was also great company and an unrivaled raconteur. I will always remember Brian with great fondness . Barry Keane

A message from Poland

Let my magically strung luteResound more gloomily and more darkly. For I have entered Agamemnon's tomb,And I sit quietly in the underground dome(..)My heart is asleep, but still it dreams. How sad I am!(J.Slowacki, Agamemnon's Tomb, tr. C. O'Neil)

Dear Brian, we had plans about reading this piece of Polish Romantic poetry and discussing somewhere in the future, but it was never meant to be it seems. I am incredibly sad but also feel privileged that I could know you in the last years of your life. My most sincere condolences go to your loved ones.
