A way with words

In Alison's message below, she wrote that she was "gobsmacked". This feeling was not prompted by Da's death, but by the eulogy at his funeral mass. It was typical of Da, he was always there to lend a helping hand. Even after he passed away. Da was a "poemer", and I built the eulogy around two of his last poems.

On the 27th of April of this year, he wrote in his diary:

"... my thoughts have turned to the 7th of June and the fact that, given my arriving there, I'll be 86. This led to a mental draft of a celebratory birthday ode. I can adapt it when the time comes, as I hope it will."

He called the celebratory ode:

86-NOT-OUT

"Not a bad innings, all told

Eighty-six-not-out, some batting to come:

What has life to bowl at me still?

Days, weeks, months, then some?

Hope keeps springing in this breast,

Spirit, not perturbed, though if it were,

As Hamlet said, rest, rest – then rest,

Until the rest is silence, and the game is done."

Well, he made it to his birthday. And then some.

And when the silence came, when he had drawn his last breath, it was beautiful. His face was relaxed; the game was done. And he had won.

He was free. Free, at last, to go to Eileen.

Gobsmacked

I never had the honour of meeting Jimmy. But thanks to Miriam, I feel like I know him. Well, at least a little bit. Put simply: he gobsmacked me. Whilst mourning I hope you can feel the joy, vivacity, vivaciousness and optimism he gave others.

By the way, I'm convinced he passed his "gobsmackingness" on to all his children and grandchildren. God bless you all.

Fond memories

Jimmy was a frequent traveller to France where we had the pleasure of getting to know this unforgettable man. We will always remember his stories, poems and laughter. Fond memories we will treasure and our condolences go to all his extended family. As I write this message he is probably chatting with Eileen who was the love of his life!

In sympathy

Fondly remembered by the Quinn-Maguires in Gex France. All the family are in our thoughts through these difficult times. Memories of long chats with good humour and a few poems and many mentions of Eileen - he'll be happy to be with her again.
