Can't find the exact words to describe my feelings when I heard your exploits during the Nigerian Civil War. I wasn't born then but I heard it all. Rest on my dear priest.

I just came across the story about Dermot's death. He became a good friend in the 1980s in Canada with travels to Trinidad and Fort Good Hope, NWT. I was an attendee of the Spiritan Mission Institute initiated by Fr. Dermot Doran and Fr. Michel de Verteuil , both Holy Ghost Fathers. They were seminal mentors for me and Dermot remained a good friend. His legacy is immense. A wonderful human being and deeply caring person. The impact of all he did continues to have ripple effects today.

A compassionate and loyal servant of God has returned to the Lord. If Ndigbo were appreciative people, every State capital would name a major road after Fr. Doran. If possible, rename Enugu Airport "Fr. Doran International Airport in appreciation of Fr Dermot Doran's effort in flying food, medicines and other relief good to starving Biafran children. You will never be forgotten. You risked your life so that others may live. Rest in Peace Fr. Doran.

Only those who lived through those times can really tell of the pains and sufferings. Any time my mother recounts those stories, goose pimples crawled all over her. We could feel her pain. My family always remembered those they loved...many young souls who never returned from the war. My father spoke with deep sorrow, of the gloominess of the skies, the day the end of the war was announced. In his words, "even the skies wept"! We thank Fr Dermot and all who saw the pain and the plight of a people subjected to the animal in their fellow human beings. External Rest Grant unto Him O Lord and let perpetual light shine on him. May He rest in Pease. Amen.
