REMEMBERING VAUGHN FORTUNE

Remembering Vaughn Fortune

There are many great and good things I can say about my friend Vaughn and some but not all are here in this humbly written letter.

When I returned to Ireland in 1985 with my family Vaughn and I became very good friends. I had made my First Communion with his lovely wife Carol when I was young and that became the basis of a long lasting friendship. Vaughn was a big bear of a man but very gentle and loving to his wife and family and friends. There were many times when Beryl and I would arrive at his door after a night in the pub and he would welcome us in for a drink and a chat. There were also many other times when he and Carol invited us to dinner. Vaughn was a great cook and loved to socialize over dinner and a bottle or two of wine. I have many fond memories of the chats the four of us would share and the laughter and jokes lasting into the wee hours of the next morning. We were there as the family grew up and probably the last great night we all had together was at the wedding of Cara before Beryl and I returned to Canada after twenty years in Ireland.

Vaughn was always the entrepreneur and I remember when he got the idea to manufacture a board game and proceeded single mindedly to make it happen. I think it was a year before the first game was produced. Although it was not that successful because of the switch among youth to computer games it still enabled Vaughn to realize his dream and do something that he wanted to do apart from his regular work.

Vaughn also spent much of his time looking after his mother up to the time she passed on to the next stage of life. Sometimes he couldn’t go out with us when he wanted to as family duty was always first and foremost with him. In later years I know that he looked after Carol who was struggling with Alzheimers and he was helped by the other members of the family. The lovely family that Vaughn and Carol reared is probably the greatest achievement of his life. All of the children turned out to be loving and caring adults with achievements of their own. No man could expect a greater reward than to see his family happy and healthy in their lives.

I heard that Vaughn passed peacefully in the loving arms of his family. I am grateful for this and I am so grateful to have known him and to be able to call him a friend.

God bless you Vaughn, you are with Jesus now and I am sure you will continue to be with your family always,

Kevin Whelan

Dec 15, 2014
