SCOTT John Martin - December 29, 2012 (ScD, Fellow of Trinity College Dublin) - Our Dad, John, passed away on Saturday, in St Luke's Hospital. Dad and Mum are now together in that great golf club in the sky that they always joked about. Martin and I (Rachel), along with Heather, Ronan, and Dad's treasured grandchildren James, Matthew, Charlotte, Isabelle Scarlet, and Ava Grace, and his sister Una, will all miss Dad terribly, and are so thankful for all the wonderful years and memories we have had together. Dad was one of Ireland's most accomplished scientists; Professor of Biochemistry, a Senior Fellow of Trinity College and a member of the Royal Irish Academy. He was recognised internationally winning numerous awards, including the first non-American to be awarded the Lederle Award from the American Society of Nutritional Science, the Gowland Hopkins Medal, the David Hawkins Lecture, the International Award for Modern Nutrition, and the TCD Provost's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning; he also collaborated extensively with the US Centres for Disease Control, and was awarded an honorary degree by both the University of Ulster, Coleraine, and University San Pablo, Madrid. The impact that his pioneering work in the field of folic acid and neural tube defects has made on the lives of countless children around the world, who would otherwise have suffered with spina bifida, cannot be measured. Dad will be sorely missed by all his family, friends and colleagues. We would like to thank all of the staff in St James's, St. Vincent's, and most recently the amazing staff at St Luke's, and the great teams of Harold's Cross Hospice Homecare and Public Health Nurses, who all helped to look after Dad. In addition, our cousin, Anne-Marie, was a tremendous help at the most difficult of times. Dad will be in repose tomorrow, Tuesday January 1 (New Years Day) from 3pm until 6pm, at the family home. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11.30am on Wednesday, January 2, in the Carmelite Church, Whitefriar Street, afterwards to Mount Jerome Crematorium. Family flowers only please, donations in lieu of flowers if desired to St Luke's Hospital, Rathgar, Dublin 6.
