A good man, a good scholar and a great defender of the Humanities. He was one of the small group that lobbied the Irish government for the creation of an Irish National Endowment for the Humanities and argued strongly for the retention of Classical Studies at the Queen's University of Belfast. Though rebuffed, these efforts were one of the factors leading eventually to the creation of an Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
