McCARTHY, Prof. Matthew F. (Circular Road, Galway, Department of Mathematical Physics and former Registrar N.U.I. Galway and late of Blarney Street, Cork), March 16, 2017, (peacefully) following a short illness; dearly beloved husband of Celia and much loved father. Sadly missed and deeply mourned by his wife, daughter Maeve and her husband Scott, son Brian and his fiancée Karen, daughter Róisín and her husband Adey, son Brendan and his wife Priscilla, adored grandchildren Susan and Nora, Joe and Kate, Iarla and Sive, extended family and friends. Reposing at the O'Flaherty Funeral Parlour, Munster Avenue, Galway this (Monday) evening from 5.00 pm with removal at 7.00 pm to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Seamus Quirke Road. Funeral after 11.00 am Requiem Mass tomorrow (Tuesday) to Rahoon Cemetery. Family flowers only by request, donations if preferred to the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association (www.ilfa.ie)May he Rest in Peace

He taught me first year eng maths physics in 1969-70. Very tough but fair. When our classmates meet occasionally we always mention him. The creak on the stairs would give the latecomer away and he'd spin around from the blackboard
