HAYES, Michael A., (Emeritus Professor of Mathematical Physics, UCD), January 1, 2017, (surrounded by his family), after a long illness bravely borne, in the excellent care of the staff of Clonskeagh Community Hospital. Wonderful husband of Colette, dear father of Paddy, Máirín (Boland), Siobhán, Michael, Paul and Seán; and adored grandfather of Kate, Megan, Anna, Mike, Sarah, Daniel, Úna, Colette, Maria, James, Andrew, Charles, Michael, Cormac, Marc and Ciarán. Predeceased by his beloved parents Pat and Josie, and his brothers Fr. Seán Hayes SMA and Patrick (Limerick). Deeply regretted by his brother Eugene, sister-in-law Anne, nieces Sarah and Emma, brother-in-law Colm, and extended family Breda, David, Mary, Ciara and Sebastiaan, and by relatives, former colleagues, students, and his many friends. Reposing at his home from 2-5pm today (Tuesday), January 3. Removal to the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Merrion Road, arriving at 5.30pm this evening. Funeral Mass tomorrow (Wednesday), January 4 at 12 noon and then to Newland's Cross Cemetery. Donations if desired to Saint Vincent de Paul.Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Michael was a dedicated Secretary General who made an enormous impact on the field of mechanics. </span><span>His passing is a huge loss for IUTAM and the Mechanics scientific community at large. Michael was my mentor when I was at UCD in the '70s, and continued to teach and inspire long after graduation. He will be missed by many friends and colleagues. My best wishes to Colette and the family on their loss. Andrew Norris
