Not having received a Christmas card from Des made me fear the worst. He was an honourable, good, interesting and generous-hearted man with whom over a few decades I spent a great deal of time in Dublin and London before he took himself off to Wexford. We discussed politics at length and in depth and never doubted each other's motives. I am so sorry that it was logistically almost impossible to communicate with him in recent years and remember him with admiration and affection.
