McCARTHY, C.P. Noel M.D. - Departed 22nd July, 2009. Noel was born in 1936 and grew up in Ireland. He received his secondary education at Mt St Joseph College, Roscrea and obtained his medical degree at the University College Cork, in Co. Cork. Noel and his future wife Kathleen immigrated to the United States in 1960 and settled in New Haven, Connecticut where they both completed their medical residency at the Hospital of St Raphael. Noel served in the U.S. Army at Valley Forge Hospital as a Captain, while there he practiced Obstetrics and Gynaecology. After his military service, Noel returned to New Haven where he obtained his Masters Degree in Public Health from Yale University and founded his own medical practice in OB/GYN. Noel, an active sailor, was a member of Milford Yacht Club and Sarasota Sailing Squadron. He spent most of his summer weekends racing sailboats with his three sons. Noel brought this love of sailing from several generations of West Cork sailing families and passed this tradition down to his four grandchildren with whom he enjoyed spending time on the water. After retirement from practice in 1999, Noel remained involved in medicine, continuing to serve as the Program Director for the New England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society where he was a past President. He was honoured in 2008 by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for outstanding contributions for furthering medical education in New England. He was an avid traveller for both pleasure and in support of his medical education mission. Noel was predeceased by his wife Kathleen Sutton McCarthy M.D. He is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law Kevin and Marianne of Boston, MA, Paul and Catherine of Redwood City, CA and Brendan and Gretchen of Hamden, CT and four grandchildren Elizabeth, Charlotte, Aidan and Andrew. Noel worked for four decades at the Hospital of St Raphael and spent his last days there under the loving care of his colleagues. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Saint Raphael Foundation, 1450 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT 06511. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in New Haven on Saturday, July 25. Interment services will be held privately in Ireland.
