I’ve thought of Mr Steepe, as he was to me, many times over the years. I was a very confused and lost teenager. With a great love of reading and writing. He was so incredibly kind and encouraging to me. He was the one who gave me the self belief, that I could one day become a writer. Last year I published my first book. His words have always stayed with me. I so appreciated his care and support. He was that one teacher who truly stands out for me as having really inspired me. I wish I had got to thank him in person. Ian taught me at Inst where he introduced us to Yeats. We persuaded him to replace the metaphysical poets with the plays of O’Casey. He was a really good teacher.

I have just learnt of Ian’s passing. He had a wealth of knowledge, was passionate about the English language and introduced me to the Thesaurus and was most inspiring . May he rest in peace xx Susan brown

I remember Mr Steepe fondly as an English teacher at John Mason School, Abingdon, in the 1970s. He inspired my love of Yeats, Joyce - and Leonard Cohen. Wendy Moore, London.

I met Ian Steepe at a Olympic Field Hockey Clinic in 1988. He was so very kind and instructive to an inexperienced coach. More than that he was a person of endearing qualities that I never forgot over time! Mike Kelly Jupiter FL

The most inspiring teacher I have ever had: he burned paper in class and asked me to write about it - today he continues to ignite my writing. A passionate and determined man that I will never forget! (Jean o'Connor - student '88-'94)

Deeply sorry to learn of Ian's death. We often met when I was Director of Poetry Ireland and we had many conversations. Ian had a wide knowledge of literature and a love of poetry. Rory Brennan.
