Rest in peace Breda -- yours was a life well-lived

Dear Auntie Breda,

We cherish the memory of the life you lived with grace, with style, and with fashion. Even in your silver years, you were always perfectly groomed and dressed-to-the-nines.

As children, our memories of you are nothing but fond. You were the girl with the golden blond hair, like someone out of a shampoo commercial. You were the aunt whom we eagerly anticipated on a Wednesday evening, bringing with you Crunchies and Smarties and Fanta, and gallons of affection. You were the aunt who tirelessly bounced us on your knees to the rhyme of “Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross”. And as you left for the night, you slipped us a few bob for pocket money.

As young adults, you generously opened your home to us and our wives, and welcomed us with tea and apple pie with lashings of cloves. Your impeccable attention to your garden paralleled the attention you gave us. And as fathers, you similarly embraced our children -- your grand-nephews and grand-nieces -- and passed them the oodles of love that you had bestowed upon us. And they too, like a generation before, appreciated the punts and fivers you slipped into their palms. We thank you for the birthday cards, and the gifts, and most importantly, for never forgetting us.

Your years of selfless sacrifice in looking after Granny O’Brien never went unnoticed nor unappreciated. And the beautiful paintings that you dedicated days and weeks of passion to, only to give them away to family and friends, and sometimes to people you barely knew, will be cherished and admired for many years to come.

Although grief-stricken in saying goodbye, we thank you for the life you lived with love and style and dignity. Rest in peace Breda -- yours was a life well-lived. We keep you in our prayers tonight, and our thoughts always.

Miss you LOTS, and love you back …

Conor, Minako and Sophina in Tokyo

October 18, 2012
