I was saddened to hear of Tom's death. We first met back in the 1960s as students of Irish history and politics in UCD. We continued to keep in touch occasionally in the subsequent years. Tom's energy, enthusiasm and lively intellectual curiosity impressed me from our first meeting. His death is a loss to all who are interested in the scholarly analysis of Ireland's modern history.
