WATERSTONE, (née Butler Rees), Susan Elizabeth on 1st August 2021 quietly and peacefully at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, Dublin after a long illness. Kind, empathic, generous and caring, she was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Tragically passed leaving her husband Aidan, sons Joshua and Daniel, mother Gretchen, siblings Carol, Stephen, Viv, Andrew, Cathy, Brian and Sarah. She will be greatly missed by her extended family, in-laws, friends, colleagues and the running community. Susan trained in Social Work and worked for many years in C.A.M.H.S. bringing hope and positive change to children and families. An outstanding marathon runner, achieving many successes at Club and county level, becoming National Marathon Champion in 2001 and representing Ireland as a veteran runner, winning a team silver medal in World Cross Country. Susan taught on the Trinity Social Work course for many years and latterly at Maynooth University. She was a gifted and charismatic teacher, imbuing her students with an appreciation of Social Work as a caring profession. After retirement Susan signed up for the Masters programme in Urban Regeneration and Development at the Technical University Dublin pursuing her love of architecture and design. Susan loved to unwind in the natural beauty and remote tranquillity of Achill. Rest in peace. A private Humanist service of cremation will take place on Thursday 5th August, 2021, at 10 a.m. in Mount Jerome Crematorium, for family and friends. Current covid restrictions will apply. WATERSTONE - On Susan’s first anniversary, Aidan, Josh and Dan would like to thank all our family and friends who have been so kind to us during this first year of bereavement. Your cards, visits, messages and gifts have been such a support to us and have helped to keep alive so many cherished memories. We would like to thank all the staff at St Vincents Private Hospital who provided such expert care and considerate attention to Susan throughout her long illness, which she greatly appreciated. Susan’s passing has left a void which cannot be filled, she was enthusiastically positive and upbeat in everything she did and she achieved so much across all aspects of her life, socially, professionally, academically and through her running. Susan maintained that positivity right up to the end and remains an inspiration to us all.
May she rest in peace.
