Old friend

I was truly sorry to hear of Tim's passing. He was a great friend when we were teenagers, quite mad and great fun. I have dearly-held memories of long cigarette-fuelled talks, often in the now gone chestnut tree that was at the end of our road, where we would sit for hours, out of sight, watching the world go by.

I remember the first time that I got drunk (at 15) was with Tim when we went on a camping holiday to Brittas Bay (which turned out to be a much longer cycle than we had anticipated). Considering Simon 'repaired' our bicycles the night before departure we were lucky to survive the trip at all. But it was glorious. We were utterly carefree and totally irresponsible and the sun shone down for the entire time.

There are lots more stories — of cycling, sailing, terrorising the Spanish students in the local convent, chasing girls — all of which I treasure. It has always been a source of regret to me that, after school, I went away, then Tim went away, and we lost touch. But I often thought of him and, wherever he was, I wished him well.

I will always feel honoured that Tim was my friend and I extend my deepest sympathy to Philip and Barbara who were always kind to me and to Simon, Rich and Rebecca who also shared some of the madness.

To Tim's children: just know that your father was a legend. May he rest in peace.
