Enthusiastic and warm

It was Sean's enthusiasm that struck me when I first met him many years ago : enthusiasm for people and for issues and ideas. This combination made meeting him into a very special event -and made you feel richer, warmer and wiser afterwards. I am especially grateful for his inspiring work and groundbreaking studies on Galilee and the Galilean Jesus, a shared interest. It is with gratitude that I give thanks for his life and extend my sympathy to his beloved ones.

Halvor Moxnes, Oslo

Condolences
We are both very saddened by the news of Sean's passing. We expected him to be around for many more years. A Gentleman and a Scholar, it is our loss and Ireland has lost one of its brightest intellectual minds. We were lucky to have him in our lives for 45 years. Our condolences to Gail, Bridget and Sarah and to Sean's sister. We have to believe he's enjoying the "here after" ...catching up with his friend John Connelly and Tommy Waldron. Out thoughts and prayers are with you all, at this very sad time. Pat and Angela Coffey. New York.

A great scholar and a kind man

Dear Gail - I was so shocked to hear of Sean's death yesterday and am full of regret that I cannot get to the funeral tomorrow. He was an inspiration to all of us who studied with him, and remained friendly and supportive down the years. I will always remember him with gratitude and will be praying for you and all the family, especially tomorrow and through the coming week. Deepest sympathy. Ginnie Kennerley

An Inspiring Man

Gail, Bridget, Sarah.

I consider having known Sean a great blessing. He was an inspiration in the way he lived, maintaining such great humility and a constant commitment to the improvement of society. Sean was an internationally renowned academic who never let the clay from Mayo fall from his boots.

He and his great friend, the recently deceased Padraic Conway, will by this time be having debates which, uniquely will range from St. Paul to Thomas Merton to Karl Rahner to their suggestions for the ideal 15 players to represent Sean's beloved Mayo on all Ireland final day.

Yes he was a great “Galilean” and also a great Gael.

Brendan Drumm.
