BOULOS (Dr. Joseph Berchmans) - 1922 - 2007 (Halifax, Nova Scotia) It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and prominent physician at his residence in Nova Scotia. He was born in Grand Falls, N.L., where he spent most of his youth. He attended St. Francis Xavier University and graduated from Dalhousie with a B.Sc. in 1948. He received his medical degree (MB BCH BAO) from the National University of Galway, Ireland, in 1954. He then went to Michigan (Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids, U.S.A.) to specialize in obstetrics and gynaecology, where he received his fellowship degree (FRCS) in 1959. Following his specialty he returned to his native land, St. John's, N.L., and practiced medicine where he became well-known and loved throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Illness befell him in the late 1960s, and he was forced to give up his loved practice of obstetrics in the 1980s. He received transplant in 1986 in London, Ont., at the good age of 64. Following his transplant surgery, he returned with gusto to pursue his special interest in a specialized field of surgery - cryosurgery. He continued to practise his beloved medicine with devotion to his patients until 1994 when he retired. He was the oldest recipient of a heart transplant in Canada and retained good health for 20 years enabling him to continue his lifelong dreams. Upon the 50 year anniversary of his Irish graduation he fulfilled his lifetime dream to become an Irish citizen. He is survived by his cherished wife of 52 years, Philomena E. Murphy, formerly of Galway, Ireland, daughters, Dr. Carolyn Boulos and Deirdre Broude, sons, Albert and Cieran Boulos, grandchildren, Krista, Daniel, James, Robert, Zachary, Connor, Sarah, Amber, Madison and Aidan. Also left to mourn is his only living sibling, beloved older brother Albert and wife Maisie and many nieces and nephews. Not to mention his loving sisters-in-law Maris O'Leary and Angela O'Sullivan of Dublin, nephews, and cousins galore in west Ireland; he will be deeply missed by a wealth of good friends. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 10 o'clock Wednesday April 25, Fr. O'Neill officiating in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Halifax, Canada. Private family interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens."May God rest his gentle soul and
may angels surround him forever"
