Uncle Charlie
Uncle Charlie never told the same story twice. He was a very, very funny man and also very generous and a great listener. Towards the end of his life, after suffering such a long and painful illness, he said to me on the phone one day that he 'had lost the will to die'. His pet dog Percy was poisoned by a local Garda in Borris in Ossory when he was eight years of age. This resulted in him having a lively relationship with the law throughout the rest of his life. His favourite song, which he sang with a quiver in his voice, was 'Goodnight Vienna'.
