Great historian too

Adrian Hardiman also demonstrated the value of a history degree, at a time when BAs were erroneously regarded widely as being of little value. He was a member of the UCD Group VIIIB (as I later was) who dedicated the whole of their time to the study of History. I was delighted indeed when he graciously presided over the Robin Dudley Edwards Prize in Modern Irish History in 1982, when I was awarded it. He was a true gentleman, and I can see why he succeeded so brilliantly at the Bar. I am saddened to see that he passed away far too soon and send my sincere sympathy to the family. I am struck by how very young and brilliant he was in 1982. May he rest in peace. Donal Lowry (UCD History 1979-82)
