McCARTHY - Mary, (née Byron) (Ballincollig, Cork and formerly of Barna, and Ballinasloe, Co Galway) (April 25, 2021) - As we approach Mary’s First Anniversary, Peter, John, Lisa, Mary’s grandchildren and the wider McCarthy and Byron families would like to sincerely thank everyone who sympathised with us on our loss. We received lovely messages of support whether in person, by phone, text, email, card, or on RIP.ie. Mary died peacefully at home surrounded by family, after a brief illness in her ninety-third year. We were very lucky to have had Susan Cayton as her carer who was so good to Mary. We would like to acknowledge the superb help we received from the HSE Public Health Nursing Unit, especially the Home Help department who gave her such attention. The Westgate Foundation in Ballincollig gave Mary a huge purpose in life especially after Denis her husband died. Our cousins the Stevenson family, especially Brendan, Sam and Fr. Pat gave wonderful support to Mary and to us in her later years. Mary’s dear neighbours kept her spirits up though the pandemic. Dr Ciara Murphy looked after Mary with such kind and compassionate care we can never forget her. The Rothwell Family undertakers in Ballinasloe, among Mary’s oldest friends, were caring and professional throughout. Mary had, at various times in her life, lived and worked in all four provinces of Ireland and she and Denis spent several years in the middle East in the 1990s. She made friends and memories everywhere she went. Mary’s life was dominated by her family, her love of golf and her sense of style. John said at her funeral mass if she had been born some years later, she would have had a huge following on Instagram. We really miss her, she is always in our hearts, but we are consoled that she is at rest with Denis her husband and her infant son, also named Denis, who would have been sixty on the day Mary was buried.
