I will miss my dearest friend

Dear Jim and Kathleen, Tom and Margaret, and family,

Fr. Ed was my angel. He watched over me from the time I was 18 until now... some 40 years.

I am struggling as I'm certain you are to believe that his physical presence is no longer with us. I know that my phone no longer rings between 8:00 and 8:30pm each night with his voice on the other end saying, "Hello Sweet Thing... how did your day go?" and ending with, "I love you, girl." His constant support and encouragement kept me putting one foot in front of the other even when I thought I couldn't go on.

He protected me from an abusive home life as a young adult and stood up for me in the face of those who would criticize me through all of my struggles to raise my children alone. I remember him telling one particular party to "Be quiet. If you had her life, you'd be dead by now." I doubt that I'll meet anyone again that can make me feel as cherished, as valued, as loved.

I asked him once who had made the greatest impact on his spiritual life... he answered his grandmother, his dear friend Anita, his sister Helen and then he said, "and you, girl... if I were Francis, you'd be Clare."

Jim and Kathleen - it was a joy to have dinner with you while you were in California last year. Who knew it would be the last time Fr. Ed and I would "concelebrate" our birthdays (albeit belatedly).

My sincerest condolences to all of you and may God be good to Fr. Ed.

Blessings,

Nina Paul

Claremont, California, USA
