Remembering Sister Anselm

I was a day girl at DCD from 1961 to 1966. Sister Anselm had a huge influence on me, as an English Catholic, and her anti-English sentiments, frequently expressed, shaped my life. She made me realise there was always another point of view even if I didn't agree with it. For the first time since 1966 I visited Dublin in March 2012 and was told that Sister Anselm was still alive, the oldest nun in Ireland. I went immediately to see her and discovered she had recently died. I place tulips on her grave and remembered her as an indomitable woman of strong passions, fiercely expressed. I have been grateful all my life for the excellent grounding in faith and hard work those wonderful Dominican sisters imparted. I became an academic and for over 30 years taught history of art at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art. I am now retired and writing a PhD.

St Anselm

I was a boarder from 1965-1970 in Dun Laoghaire, Sr Anslem taught me Latin. I can't believe that she only died this year. My condolences to the remainng Domnican Sisters and her family. Sr Anslem was definitely a character and a very strong personality. I hope her later years were comfortable and rewarding for her. My sister Mary Doyle was a boarder from 1957 - 1963. I will inform her of Sr Anselm's death when I talk to her again. I have been living in Brisbane since 1985 and before that spent five years in Papua New Guinea.

Deirdre Doyle White
