Kathleen Ryan in Kenya

This image was taken on one of the amazing Kenya trips I took with Kathleen. This really sums up Kathleen. She loved all creatures, human or not, equally. Well, maybe not all humans but she loved all the children. She was such a wonderful mentor to me and many others. She became a part of our lives at the museum and we became part of hers. The stories she would tell were hysterical, such as the fish she smuggled through the airport pre 9/11. I am grateful for those stories and the new stories created in Kenya. The stories while digging in Laikipia, having cookies stolen by monkeys, Squirrels stealing Kathleen's medicine from her straw roofed hut, or Elephants visiting in the middle of the night. The lessons on proper maasai etiquette; the blue candy she would buy on each trip for the children(and us: we were her children as well); the tea with Maasai elders, and the joy on their faces when Kathleen would arrive. Kathleen will be missed.

Am very sad at Kathleen's death. What fun we had together at 19 Pembroke Road when we lived 48 hrs a day, studying, working and having fun. Love Marie
