Thinking of Dermot and his family...

PACA Secretariat staff members were also so fortunate to know Dermot Cassidy in the last couple of years. Our introduction to aflatoxin issues in Africa started with Dermot in some ways when we met him at the very first meeting in 2011. Dermot has been instrumental for so long in handling key food safety issues that one can hardly work on these issues without having known him.

Our grief and sadness at the early loss of this most highly regarded scientist, professional and colleague is significant. We wish to express our condolences to Dermot’s wife and to his family, and say that we are thinking of all during this difficult time.

Rest in peace Dear Dermot

Dear Dermot, you will be greatly missed. I feel blessed to have had the pleasure to work with such a humble, smart and beautiful human being as you. I learned so much from you and really enjoyed our conversations. You challenged and motivated me as a scientist and human being. The world will not be the same without you. All my thoughts are with you and your family.

May our memories keep us. Rest in Peace Dermot.

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high over vales and hills

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay;

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they

Out did the sparkling waves in glee

A poet could not but be gay,

In such a jocund company.

I gazed – and gazed – but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.

– William Wordsworth

I will remember you well Dermot.

Uncle Dermot

Uncle Dermot was a terrific guy and he will definitely be missed. He was probably the smartest person I have ever met. I don't think there are many people out there who are as dedicated and intelligent and kind as Dermot.
