Paul, lovable friend

Paul will be missed by his many friends, each of whom have special memories. We feel the sadness of loss, but also smile as we recall his boisterous spirit, immense talent, unbounded enthusiasm, loyal friendship, great generosity and (not least) his lovable antics. I met Paul when he came to speak to the UCG Arts Society in 1971; we sealed our friendship when he took an evening philosophy course in UCD in the early 80s. I last saw him on his 67th birthday in the nursing home in Bray; he was in ebullient form, playing an imaginary saxophone as he recalled his favourite showbands of the Sixties. Forty years of friendship, enriched by many adventures. Among the most memorable was a painting trip to the Cyclades in 2002. Wherever he went on foreign trips he delighted his friends with an unexpected card, signed by his bearded self-portrait.

Thank you Paul. Rest easy; ní bheidh do leithéid arís ann.
