One more letter to a dear friend

John,

We often say words fail us at times like this. It occurs to me to just say, “Thank you”. This is heartfelt thanks which stretches through many decades, so many experiences, strengthened by friendship and gives comfort in knowing you as a great and close friend. It is gratitude from that lost and confused kid you tossed a lifeline to so many years ago. I’m not sure you were aware of the change you made in my life when you showed up, uninvited, at my front door with a chicken and bottle of wine and insisted on making dinner. I’m not sure you were aware of the significant impact you continually made on my life for the next 40 years, and the excellent part of it is, you will walk with me for the rest of my life. It is said our good deeds go to the grave with us. It is a true and good thing as we, alone, own them. It should also be said your good deeds will live on in me and those many people whose lives you genuinely touched and spirits you uplifted. Your presence was positive for so many people. Your humor, your stories, your kindness. I never could quite figure out how someone so demanding could be essentially so selfless. Perhaps that is the mark of a good teacher. Perhaps someday I will understand. In the meantime, thank you, my dear friend, for bringing change in my life and making me think. You showed me how to positively affect the lives of others and how to become valuable to myself. I will miss our visits, our conversations our philosophizing over a glass of wine. I shall always treasure those same visits and savor the time you gave me. Thank you, John.

Love

David and Annie
