Sadly Missed

Mrs Leslie was Headmistress of St Mary's Hall school in Brighton when I arrived aged 11 in 1977. I have never met such a kind, caring and genuine individual and remember with fondess being invited to tea in her drawing room, boarders evening pyjama parrties in her flat, the time she made up a new bed for me in the San when mine had been soaked by another girl pouring a jug of water over the mattress as a prank and the many times she gave lifts in her car to my Mother, who could not drive.
Mrs Leslie also made it possible for me to stay at St Mary's much longer than would otherwise have been possible. When financial pressures began to bite my father came to her for help, and having exhausted all possible avenues for scholarships, she pursuaded the then Bursar, Commander Martin, to institute a new Bursary scheme for Armed Forces children and I was the first beneficiary.
I remember with great fondness early morning communions in the Chapel where she rarely missed a service. When my daughter was born many years later she sent money for us to purchase a Bible which my daughter still uses.
Words cannot express how much I owe Mrs Leslie. I looked forward to meeting her at Annual School Reunions and I know she genuinely appreciated the effort I made to "give back" something to the school community which made it possible for me to achieve so much in later life.
