Lt.Gen.O'Neill R.I.P, from Patrick Herns, London

I knew Tadhg less formally than some; he was my uncle. He did my mother and me the great honour of being a bulwark of support when we lost my father, Paul, in 1966 and again when we lost my [step]father, Fred, in 1992.

He spoke eloquently and sincerely, on behalf of the whole family, when he welcomed my new wife at our wedding in 1997.

Apart from his very obvious and heartfelt humanity, Tadhg had a quality that is frequently difficult for people to grasp: that if you are faced with a really complicated problem and under the cosh of time, then what you are really facing is a lot of very simple problems, joined end-to-end and squeezed too tightly together. To overcome this, he noted, it was best to think and act quietly; to concentrate the mind solely on the logistics - the rest would fall away, as unnecessary clutter.

Oh, by the way, if there are any out there who thought that Tadhg O'Neill was too busy to notice the kindness and the care that people took on his behalf, then be advised that you were mistaken. He did notice. He took your kindness very much to heart and he always hoped that he had treated each of you with the respect and deference due from one human to another, regardless of the outward advantages of rank or of fortune.

Ireland has lost a very fine son.

HERNS
