Gratitude

I'm very sad to hear of Professor O'Buachalla's passing, yet I also feel so fortunate to have had the benefit of his lectures and close readings at the Summer Seminar. He was inspirational: a kind and generous listener as well as a wonderful 'encourager'.

I will keep him and his loved ones in my prayers.

Laoch ar lár

Tá Gaeil uile an domhain faoi mhór-chomaoin ag an Ollamh Breandán Ó Buachalla as an sárshaothar a d'fhág sé mar oidhreacht againn. Níl seachtain ná léim rud éigin as "Aisling Ghéar". Leabai measc na naomh go raibh agat, a Bhreandáin.

Le mór-mheas.

Seán Ó Riain

Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam

Ceann de na cúiseanna is mó dá raibh agam le dul le Gaeilge fadó ab ea an grá a thug mé do "Mo Ghiolla Mear", an t-amhrán cáiliúil. Nuair a thosaigh mé ag baint adhmaid as Gaeilge scríofa, bhí mórleabhar an Ollaimh Uí Bhuachalla - "Aisling Ghéar" - ar ceann de na chéad leabhair a léigh mé sa teanga - leabhar inar chardáil sé go cuimsitheach an t-amhrán seo chomh maith leis na cinn eile a bhaineann le seánra na haislinge. Chuaigh an leabhar faoi stair Ghaelach Bhéal Feirste - "I mBéal Feirste Chois Cuain" - go mór i bhfeidhm orm fosta, nó creidim go raibh sé ar duine acu siúd ba túisce a tharraing ár súil ar ról iontach na bProtastúnach sa stair seo. Fear a bhí ann a rinne cion cúpla fear ag forbairt na Gaeilge mar theanga chultúrtha scolártha.

Prof Harry White, UCD School of Music

A formidable and inspiring scholar has gone from us, a man whose magisterial and no less passionate engagement with Irish literature and cultural history permanently endowed the traditions he surveyed with the intellectual vigour and brilliance they deserved. His passing makes me deeply regret that I do not have the Irish to acknowledge properly the debt in which he placed all those who would write seriously about Gaelic culture. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
