In memory of a Friend

I remember Martina as a great friend when I needed one. She was extremely well read & highly intelligent - energetic, flamboyant & generous - who always spoke her mind & didn't mince her words. She had a wonderful sense of humour & beautiful white teeth. It was with great sadness when I heard of her passing. May she rest in peace. Angela O'Sullivan (A colleague from RTE days).

For a friend

Years ago I read this to Martine and she asked me to read it at her funeral; we lost touch in recent years but she was always in my thoughts and prayers.

“A ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon
and someone at my side says
She is gone.
Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all.
She is just as large now as when I last saw her.
Her diminished size and total loss from my sight is in me, not in her.
And just at that moment, when someone at my side says she is gone,
there are others who are watching her coming over their horizon
and other voices take up a glad shout -
There she comes!”

May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest,

Hazel x
