Mary Boydell (nee Jones)

It is sad to report the loss of another pillar of knowledge of British glass history.Although living in Dublin she was a loyal supporter of The Glass Circle in London. She read at least three papers to the Circle, published in its Journal nos. 2 and 7. She was also Sotheby’s Glass Representative in Ireland.

Mary was best known for her revised edition of Dudley Westrop’s Irish Glass (1978). As well as a booklet, Irish Glass (1976) she wrote14 articles for periodicals; they covering a wide range of Irish glass interests including one on the Dublin engraver Franz Tieze (1842-1932).

As well as help organise glass conferences in Dublin Mary hosted a Glass Circle trip to Ireland (1995) that ending with a reception at her home on the cliffs overlooking Dublin Bay. About this time she was formative in establishing The Glass Society of Ireland of which she was elected President. It prospered for a while with its own journal but eventually collapsed due to a lack of membership.

Mary was deeply involved with the National Museum of Ireland regarding all matters glass, organising one exhibition and assisting with the move to and display of its glass collection at Collin’s Barracks. Mary left her own collection to the Museum.

As Mary Jones she was a talented singer as a result of which she met and married the late Brian Boydell who became Professor of Musicology at Trinity College, Dublin. Not just her encyclopaedic knowledge of Irish glass but also her traditional Irish charm and hospitality will be missed by all who knew her.

Dr. David C. Watts (Hon. Vice-President, The Glass Circle)

Good glasses remain forever.

Dear Barra and all the family. We have only today heard about your Mother and will miss her dearly. Glass collecting is like a good wine; you remember who you were with and the discussions that were involved before and after a purchase. All I have to do is look at my collection and your Mother comes back with a majority of the pieces. She will not be forgotten.

With our sincere good wishes,

Colin and Steph Sullivan.

Remembering Mary Boydell, the first lady of Irish Glassware.

To the family and friends of Mrs MARY BOYDELL:

I am sorry for the loss of your mother and friend.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Boydell at a meeting of the Irish Glass Society. She graciously signed the copy of the book that she had authored on glass that I had brought with me from Los Angeles.

I told her that by meeting her, I had met Westropp, the 'grandfather' of all Irish glass collectors.

Mary laughed, told me to trust in Westropp as 'he got it right' in his writings. 'Trust the text, the pictures were secondary' she said.

Mrs. Boydell was a font of glass knowledge and willingly shared it with her fellow friends, collectors and students.

I feel lucky to have met her.

Sincerely, Christopher Yeager
