Tea with Anna

Dear Mr. Declan White, Conleth, Dara, Iseult, and Fiona,

I spent one of the loveliest afternoons of my life with Anna in her sitting room. We had tea and talked of Maud Gonne, about whom I was writing a musical at the time. I was so thrilled to be speaking with Anna that I was shaking and broke her tea cup! She was ever so gracious and did not show the slightest sign of irritation. (Consequently, I shipped her a handmade tea cup from America as soon as I could go shopping!) Her intelligence and loveliness remain in my mind, and I had hoped to return again to Ireland to another tea with her.

I recently met Cormac O'Malley, son of Maud's compatriot Ernie O'Malley. We spoke eagerly of those brave people in Irish history that we admire so much. Sadly, Cormac had never met Anna, and was hoping to invite her to his newest book release, to be held in Dublin this December 2015. It has been several years since I last wrote her, and I just discovered this death notice. If any of you would like to attend the book signing, I will be glad to put Cormac in touch with you directly. My email is hernelily@gmail.com. I know he would be thrilled to meet you.

I want to send my belated condolences to you all, and to let you know how deeply Anna's kindness, hospitality, and literary work has had profound effect even across the ocean.

Best wishes for the future and kindest regards,

Lily Gonne Herne

Athens, Georgia, USA

All our condolences from the FitzGerald's

Dear Declan and family, it was with sorrow that I read about the death of Anna, I remember all the wonderful times we spent down on Blessington lake when we were young and the time spent with you and Anna. I hope her death was a peaceful one. Know that we are all thinking of you and the family Aoife (daughter of Meadhbh and Maurice FitzGerald)
